The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.[1]
The third day he arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit;
I believe in the holy catholic church,[2]
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

[1] A better English translation of the original meaning would be “he descended to the dead,” as the intent was probably to stress the truth that Jesus’ human soul did, indeed, descend to the place of the dead and so refute the Apollinarian heresy which erroneously taught that Jesus’ divine nature replaced his human soul.

[2] The word "catholic" refers not to the Roman Catholic Church, but to the universal church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
